Why I Finally Decided to Switch / 乗り換えを決めた理由
Honestly, I had been putting it off for years. Switching phone plans in Japan sounds complicated — MNP procedures, eSIM setup, credit checks. I kept telling myself “maybe next month.”
正直に言うと、何年も後回しにしていました。MNPとか、eSIMとか、なんか面倒くさそうで。「来月やろう」を繰り返してきました。
What finally pushed me was a simple calculation. ¥6,500 × 12 months = ¥78,000 a year. Just for my phone. That number hit different.

Nihon Tsushin (日本通信) is a Japanese MVNO that uses NTT Docomo’s network. That means coverage is essentially the same as Docomo — one of Japan’s largest carriers — but at a fraction of the price.
日本通信は、NTTドコモの回線を使っている格安SIM会社（MVNO）です。つまりエリアはほぼドコモと同じ。大手キャリア並みのエリアで、料金だけ安くなります。
The company has been around since 1999 and is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. It’s not a startup — which was one of the reasons I felt comfortable switching.
1999年創業、東証上場企業です。いわゆる「怪しい格安SIM」ではないので、そこは安心できました。

I was nervous about switching to a lesser-known carrier. But knowing Nihon Tsushin has been around for 25+ years and runs on Docomo’s network made me feel much better about it.
知名度が低いSIM会社に乗り換えるのは最初怖かったです。でも25年以上の実績があってドコモ回線ということがわかって、ぐっと安心感が増しました。

I chose the ¥290 シンプル290 plan because I mainly use Wi-Fi at home and at work. 1GB is honestly enough for me — I use it mostly for maps and messaging when I’m out.

How to Switch (MNP) / 乗り換え手順
The process is mostly online and takes about 30–60 minutes total (plus waiting time for the SIM or eSIM activation).
手続きはほぼオンラインで完結します。作業自体は30〜60分程度。eSIMなら即日開通も可能です。
🗓️ 乗り換えの流れ
- MNP予約番号を取得：今のキャリアのアプリ・WEBから発行（無料）
- 日本通信SIMのサイトで申し込み：プランを選んでカート→本人確認
- 本人確認：マイナンバーカードをスマホで読み取るだけ（eSIMの場合）
- 開通手続き：申し込み完了後、メールの案内に従って設定
- APN設定：iPhoneはプロファイルをインストール、Androidは手動設定

The good:
- Coverage has been great — I haven’t had any dead zones that I didn’t have before
- The app is simple and easy to use
- ¥290 is genuinely ¥290. No hidden fees that I’ve found

- 電波は問題なし。ドコモ回線なので、以前と変わらないエリアをカバーしています
- アプリがシンプルで使いやすい
- 290円はほんとに290円。今のところ謎の追加料金はゼロ

気をつけること：

If your partner is a foreign resident, here are a few things to keep in mind before switching:
外国人パートナーがいる場合、または自分が外国人の場合に気をつけてほしいことをまとめました。
✅ 外国人でも申し込める条件
・在留カードを持つ外国人は申し込み可能
・本人確認書類：在留カード or マイナンバーカード
・クレジットカードでの支払いが必要（デビットカード不可の場合あり）
・住所は日本国内のみ
⚠️ 注意：ミドルネームについて
外国人の方でミドルネームがある場合、クレジットカードと在留カードの名前表記が異なることがあります。申し込み前にカード会社に確認することをおすすめします。（楽天カードでのミドルネームトラブルについてはこちらの記事もどうぞ）
My partner and I both use separate plans — I’m on the ¥290 plan, and he’s on a slightly higher-tier plan that includes more data for video calls back home. Finding the right plan for each person individually makes more sense than assuming one size fits all.
